DESCRIPTION:\nBlack Girlhood &amp\; Hip Hop\nDr. Carla will be speaking at 
 the 2014 Hip Hop Literacies Conference at Ohio State University.\n\nWorksh
 op Description\n\n\n\nHip hop-influenced popular culture has been criticiz
 ed for glorifying sex\, violence\, misogyny\, consumerism\, substance use 
 and risky behaviors that disproportionately impact youth of color and Blac
 k girls.  Based on Dr. Carla's award-winning research on the intersection
 s between Black adolescent girls’ sexuality\, identity and body image wi
 th youth culture\, hip hop and social media\, this workshop is designed to
  assist educators\, mentors\, adult allies\, youth workers and girl-servin
 g professionals in understanding the role of hip hop-influenced popular cu
 lture in the lives of Black girls.\n\nIn this interactive workshop\, Dr. C
 arla will provide an overview of the sexualization of girls in the media a
 nd relevant health issues facing black girls\, including sexual health\, b
 ody image and intimate partner violence.  Participants will explore creat
 ive strategies and best practices for using hip hop as a tool for educatin
 g Black girls and involving them in health\, media literacy and youth deve
 lopment programs that challenge unhealthy gender norms and stereotypes.\n\
 nPlease note: Dr. Carla will be presenting during the entire workshop.\n\n

 -literacies/\n\nAbout Dr. Carla\n\nDr. Carla Stokes\, PhD\, MPH is a teen 
 health and behavior expert\, girl empowerment advocate\, professional spea
 ker\, and success coach who specializes in helping young women\, girls\, a
 nd parents thrive through the pressures and transitions of adolescence. Dr
 . Carla is also the founder of Helping Our Teen Girls In Real Life Situati
 ons\, Inc. (HOTGIRLS)®\, an award-winning 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizatio
 n dedicated to empowering underserved young women and girls to develop lea
 dership skills\, create positive social change in their communities\, and 
 realize their full potential.\n\n\nDr. Carla began using hip hop-influence
  popular culture as an educational tool in the classroom in the 1990’s\,
  while she was enrolled as a student at Spelman College. She earned her Do
 ctor of Philosophy and Master of Public Health degrees from the University
  of Michigan and completed a post-doctoral research fellowship at the U.S.
  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. During her doctoral studies a
 t the University of Michigan\, Dr. Carla taught a course on representation
 s of Black women in hip hop and popular culture as an instructor in the De
 partment of Women’s Studies. Her activism and pioneering scholarly resea
 rch have been published in academic journals and books and featured in nat
 ional media outlets.\n\n
