Dr. Carla delivering her invited presentation at the 2014 Hip Hop Literacies Conference at The Ohio State University
Dr. Carla was invited to present at the Hip Hop Literacies Conference at The Ohio State University, where she shared her interdisciplinary scholarship on the intersections of Black girlhood, hip-hop culture, media, identity, and health. Drawing on her award-winning research, the session examined how popular culture shapes girls’ development while highlighting the potential of hip hop as a culturally relevant framework for education, critical media literacy, and positive youth development.
Participants explored the influence of media messages on girls’ identity development, body image, relationships, and overall well-being, with particular attention to the sexualization of girls in media and the experiences of Black girls. The presentation also introduced creative popular education strategies for incorporating hip hop into educational, public health, and youth development settings to foster healthy identity development and critical thinking that challenges unhealthy gender norms and stereotypes.
