I started a girl empowerment nonprofit called Helping Our Teen Girls In Real Life Situations, Inc. (HOTGIRLS)® with $20 when I was a doctoral student at the University of Michigan. Although I was trained to become an adolescent health researcher and professor, I felt a calling on my heart to make a career out of helping and empowering girls in Atlanta, Georgia. As I grew HOTGIRLS during the first 5 years, I was a full-time volunteer and struggled to generate enough revenue to sustain my work. At the time, I was passionately driven solely by my heart for educating youth and helping girls and did not realize how important it would be to have a solid plan for generating revenue and adequate financial resources to sustain my dreams. Although I received extensive training on adolescent girls’ health and behavior in my doctoral program and post-doctoral research fellowship at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, I was not taught how to run a business!

My speaking and coaching business finally took off and soared to new heights when I adopted a CEO mindset and decided that I would figure out how to monetize my work through speaking and coaching.

I spent several years soaking up everything I could learn about entrepreneurship, marketing, sales, web design, running an online business, speaking, and coaching so I could learn how to run a profitable business. I invested a lot of time, energy and money in learning how to transform my relationship with money and monetize my passion for empowering girls.

During this time, I got very serious about my business and let go of the beliefs and behaviors that were holding me back from making money. I also gained clarity about my ideal audience and message, invested my time, energy and money in professional coaching and training, and surrounded myself with a community of supportive women from around the globe who are committed to helping each other become financially empowered through entrepreneurship.

After I transformed my nonprofit mindset and implemented what I learned from my business mentors, I had a financial breakthrough in my business, doubled my annual revenues, exceeded my 9 to 5 income, and grew my business to new heights.

Getting clarity and investing in professional support enabled me to completely revamp my business model, get comfortable with selling my services, raise my fees, and set up business systems to free up my time and energy. As a result, my work became so much more enjoyable and rewarding after I stopped standing in my own way, giving myself away, discounting myself, and undervaluing my services. I now enjoy getting paid what I am worth in exchange for my expertise and helping women and girls became more empowered.

It’s a blessing that I have been self-employed full-time since I stepped out on faith and left my last full-time position at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2006. Trust me, it wasn’t easy to transition from getting a predictable paycheck from a comfortable federal government position and receiving grant funding from foundations to support my work to relying on myself to consistently generate my own income to fund my dreams.

But because I followed my heart and refused to give up, I am continuing to level up every year. I went many years without taking a vacation (while running my former nonprofit) and now enjoy traveling to glamorous cities that I once only dreamed about, visiting fashion design exhibits in Paris (my happy place), shopping in Italy, and running my business from my laptop at the beach.

Words cannot describe how empowering it feels to know that I am capable of creating the income I desire on my own without having to  rely on nonprofit funding to support my passion for empowering girls! And it’s an amazing feeling to wake up every morning and get paid to do what I love for a living, while working primarily from my home office and hanging out with my furry friends (this was my norm for almost 15 years before the pandemic).

• I agree to respect Dr. Carla’s time and provide at least 24 hours advance notice in the event that I must cancel my scheduled coaching session. I understand that space is limited and there is no guarantee that my session will be rescheduled.
