Black Girlhood & Hip Hop

Dr. Carla will be speaking at the 2014 Hip Hop Literacies Conference at Ohio State University.

Workshop Description

recordingstudiodreams

Hip hop-influenced popular culture has been criticized for glorifying sex, violence, misogyny, consumerism, substance use and risky behaviors that disproportionately impact youth of color and Black girls.  Based on Dr. Carla’s award-winning research on the intersections between Black adolescent girls’ sexuality, identity and body image with youth culture, hip hop and social media, this workshop is designed to assist educators, mentors, adult allies, youth workers and girl-serving professionals in understanding the role of hip hop-influenced popular culture in the lives of Black girls.

In this interactive workshop, Dr. Carla will provide an overview of the sexualization of girls in the media and relevant health issues facing black girls, including sexual health, body image and intimate partner violence.  Participants will explore creative strategies and best practices for using hip hop as a tool for educating Black girls and involving them in health, media literacy and youth development programs that challenge unhealthy gender norms and stereotypes.

Please note: Dr. Carla will be presenting during the entire workshop.
